The Pearl in a Shell represents making the most out of life, including the irritations. A pearl begins as a grain of sand that got in the shell. The animal becomes irritated but can't expel the grain of sand, so instead secretes nacre, a hard substance with iridescent qualities. Over time, the nacre layers make the original sharp grain of sand rounder and with softer edges. The pearl becomes bigger and bigger over time and with consistent daily efforts to add new layers. Because of that original irritation, the pearl exists. Without it, the pearl could not be.
